Zheng stuns Keys as US Open upsets dim American hopes

Zheng Qinwen stunned Madison Keys and advanced to the US Open last 16 on a day of upsets that marred American hopes in Flushing Meadows. Fourth-seeded Coco Gauff prevailed in straight sets, while 18-year-old American Iva Jovic overcame a Philippines sensation. However, American hopes took a hit with the elimination of ninth-seeded Taylor Fritz and 2025 finalist Amanda Anisimova.

Flavio Cobolli of Italy and Alexander Blockx both lost to Alexander Blockx as well. Zheng saved a match point in her 1-6, 7-6 (7/3), 7-5 victory over Keys, the 2025 Australian Open champion. The Paris Olympics gold medallist appeared to lose steam in the final set, having to qualify after recovering from elbow surgery. Keys took an early lead in the third set but Zheng fought back from 5-1 to save match point.

Zheng, currently ranked 121st, will face six-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek next. Belgian teenager Blockx shocked Cobolli, winning 6-7 (4/7), 6-3, 6-0, 6-3. Blockx faces Francisco Cerundolo, who outlasted ninth-seeded Fritz in a grueling match. In other matches, Austrian Anastasia Potapova defeated Amanda Anisimova, and former champion Gauff overcame a slow start to beat Spain's Cristina Bucsa. Gauff will face Jovic next, with the men's top seed Alexander Zverev also advancing.
