Youth and Sports Ministry to prioritise grassroots sports development and athlete welfare in Budget 2027

The Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) has shared a preliminary draft of its Budget 2027 plans with the Finance Ministry (MOF), highlighting grassroots sports development, youth involvement, and athlete welfare as key priorities. KBS Minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari revealed the framework was crafted using feedback gathered during the Madani Youth Budget Tour across six regions throughout the country.

Although the tour's completion is pending, KBS has collected opinions from youth groups, sports associations, and unstructured youths for examination and evaluation. KBS has already consulted Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan and submitted the initial budget proposal for assessment.

The ministry aims to create more opportunities and space for public participation in sports activities, with a specific focus on grassroots level development to nurture a larger pool of reserve athletes. They also plan to enhance athlete welfare, including retirees and former contributors to the nation. Dr Taufiq noted that KBS considered input from sports associations, youth organizations, and the needs of rural youths who have not previously engaged with any ministry programs.

In addition, KBS intends to conduct nationwide tours in 2027 to engage as many youth participants as possible, incorporating large-scale activities as well as smaller community-based programs. He emphasized the ministry's intention to meet every young person through a comprehensive mix of mass events and community-level initiatives across Malaysia the following year.
