Woman laid to rest in coffin made from mushrooms in Australian first

Carolyn, a woman in her 70s, has become the first person in Australia to be buried in a unique eco-friendly coffin made from mushrooms. The coffin, crafted by Dutch firm Loop Biotech, is composed of mycelium and hemp fibres and can decompose within 45 days, enriching the soil in the process. Carolyn's husband, David, chose the mushroom coffin to honor his wife's values of giving back to nature.

While this is the first such burial in Australia, Loop Biotech's founder, Bob Hendrikx, reports that thousands of similar coffins have been used in Europe and the US. Hendrikx hopes the mushroom coffins will enhance the sustainability of the Australian funeral sector by reducing the time it takes for bodies to decompose. Dr. Hannah Gould, a cultural anthropologist at the University of Melbourne, notes an increasing interest in environmentally friendly farewells, as people may value community and eco-friendly options more as they become less religious.

The mushroom coffin's decomposition process is comparable to composting, allowing the body and coffin to merge with the soil more quickly than traditional wooden caskets, which can take up to 50 years to break down.
