Wait just a second: No. 16 Michigan catches second-chance Hail Mary, survives scare vs WMU

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — With a last-second Hail Mary pass, No. 16 Michigan edged Western Michigan 13-12 in a thrilling game. Coach Kyle Whittingham, making his debut, had selected Michigan to be a 27.5-point favorite. The Broncos believed they had pulled off an historic upset when Underwood’s initial Hail Mary sailed out of bounds with the clock ticking down. Officials, however, reviewed the play and determined there was still time for a catch.

Western Michigan was narrowly escaping a crushing blow to their season, potentially ending Michigan’s winning streak. The Broncos kicked four field goals and forced three turnovers, including a fumble by Underwood with 1:50 left. Michigan took a 12-7 lead into halftime.

Bryce Underwood connected with JJ Buchanan on a 47-yard touchdown pass to secure the victory for Michigan. The coach, reflecting on his first game as a head coach, attributed the win to his team, not to Underwood.
