Hawkins, Overton carry Virginia Tech over VMI 73-3 in Franklin debut

BLACKSBURG, Va. — Marcellous Hawkins Jr. and Jeffrey Overton Jr. were instrumental in Virginia Tech's 73-3 victory over VMI, marking the debut of head coach James Franklin. Franklin, previously dismissed from Penn State and hired by Virginia Tech just 36 days ago, witnessed a dominant performance from his team. From the outset, the Hokies (1-0) scored on their first six possessions and only punted once throughout the game.

VMI (0-2) struggled, accumulating just 83 yards. The defense also thwarted VMI, holding them to a low yardage and a blocked punt leading to a touchdown. Hired to rejuvenate a Virginia Tech program that had endured five losing seasons in a row, Franklin bolstered the roster with 27 transfers, including 12 who followed him from his previous position.

Quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer, who started seven games for Penn State the previous season, had an impressive debut with 224 passing yards and two touchdowns. Overton, who rushed for 108 yards and two touchdowns, and Grunkemeyer, contributed significantly with 619 total yards. The Keydets, who were predicted to finish at the bottom of the Southern Conference, were overwhelmed by the Hokies' prowess.

As for the future, VMI will host Bucknell, while Virginia Tech will face off against Old Dominion in their upcoming games.
