Ukraine Abstains as UN Backs Equal Earth Map Showing Crimea Separate From Ukraine

Ukraine refrained from voting during a United Nations session on adopting the Equal Earth map projection, as the map depicted the temporarily occupied Crimean peninsula distinctly separate from the rest of Ukrainian territory, the Permanent Mission of Ukraine to the UN shared. The Equal Earth map, designed in 2018, aims to more accurately represent landmasses by using a distinctly lighter shade for Crimea and differentiating it from Russia.

Other disputed territories like those in Georgia and Moldova did not receive unique cartographic distinctions. Ukrainian lawmaker Kira Rudik stated that the map's depiction led to Ukraine's abstention, which was proposed by Togo. The Ukrainian mission emphasized that, while they support eliminating historical distortions, the map's portrayal of occupied Ukrainian territory violates the UN Charter and international law.

Diplomats noted that earlier negotiations with sponsors failed to produce a compromise. The map's creation aimed to correct historical injustices, especially in Africa, but the dispute highlights concerns about potential new distortions and ambiguities. The US declined to join a joint statement marking Ukraine's 35th independence anniversary, which condemned Russian aggression, reflecting past decisions regarding Ukrainian-backed UN resolutions.

Russian Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya dismissed the ceasefire appeal, insisting Moscow would reject any agreement compromising security interests.
