U.S. envoys Witkoff, Kushner hold ‘encouraging’ talks in Ukraine

U.S. diplomats Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner arrived in Kyiv on Sunday for their inaugural official visit to Ukraine, seeking a peace agreement following Russia's ongoing invasion. The trip took place after a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, which aimed to reignite efforts for peace despite the truce agreement between the two nations. The path to progress has been challenging for the U.S., as they have redirected their focus from the Iran conflict to Ukraine.

Russian forces have intensified their aerial attacks, employing fast-flying, jet-powered drones, which have instilled a daily fear among Kyiv residents who constantly hear the wail of air-raid sirens. The 1,250-kilometer front line between the two nations has seen limited progress. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his willingness to engage in "constructive" talks with U.S. emissaries, emphasizing the need for peace, security guarantees, and a just postwar solution.

Ukrainian officials and representatives from European partners such as France, Germany, and the United Kingdom joined the envoys in Kyiv on Sunday. However, the meeting with Putin on Saturday did not yield any significant breakthroughs. While Putin's foreign policy adviser, Yuri Ushakov, described the talks as constructive, frank, and useful, the session did not concentrate solely on the war in Ukraine. Economic matters and potential joint projects between Russia and America were also discussed extensively.

The ongoing conflict continues, with Russia and Ukraine exchanging fire overnight into Sunday. The clash resulted in one death and at least 10 injuries, with a Ukrainian drone strike killing a 74-year-old man and four others in the Khmelnytskyi region. Despite these casualties, Ukraine's air force managed to intercept 82 drones launched by Russia, along with six missiles. In response, Russia claimed to have shot down 258 Ukrainian drones across 14 regions and in the Crimean Peninsula and Black and Azov Seas.

Today, Kyiv residents observed a moment of silence in memory of fallen soldiers, while mixed expectations linger in the air. Nataliia Lipei, a 67-year-old whose son died in 2022, expressed her hope that the Moscow and Kyiv meetings would lead to an end to the war. However, Oleksandr Pastukhov, a 27-year-old video editor who attended the commemoration, remained skeptical about the impact of the envoys' visit.
