Turnout Surges in Saxony-Anhalt State Election

By midday, over a third of voters in Saxony-Anhalt, eastern Germany, had already cast their ballots in the state election, with polls suggesting Alternative for Deutschland (AfD) would lead the race. Turnout reached 34.7%, reflecting a surge in interest for an election that has drawn protests from political opponents and pro-democracy activists alarmed by the far-right party's insurgent presence.

This marks a significant increase compared to 2021, when voter turnout was 22.4%. The nationwide AfD candidate Ullrich Siegmund was leading with over 40% support, though an outright majority remained uncertain. Police in Magdeburg reported being prepared for potential disturbances following the vote, with warnings issued ahead of time.

Smaller left-wing groups traveled from Berlin, while thousands of FC Magdeburg supporters journeyed to Berlin for a match, expected to return by evening. Incumbent CDU Minister-President Sven Schulze faces a tough challenge against the insurgent AfD, with Socialist Left Party poised for third place. Schulze ruled out having AfD or Left Party members in his cabinet, a stance that has angered supporters.

The CDU has a history of refusing cooperation with both the AfD and Left Party, but Thuringia recently governed under a "Magdeburg Model" minority government tolerated by the Left since 2018.
