They crossed the State border for healthcare. Now, Andhra Pradesh is helping this Telangana hospital

On an overnight medical emergency, 52 patients from Andhra Pradesh were transported to Bhadrachalam Area Hospital in Telangana’s Bhadradri Kothagudem district. The Polavaram district administration, recognizing that nearly 40% of the hospital’s patient load originates from Andhra Pradesh, offered to support the Telangana hospital with medicines and drugs.

The patients, mostly children and five adults, had reportedly fallen ill following the consumption of chloroquine tablets distributed during a health camp in Gollaguppa village, Andhra Pradesh. One infant arrived deceased, while 12 patients tested positive for malaria.

Bhadradri Kothagudem District Coordinator of Hospital Services (DCHS) G. Ravi Babu and Area Hospital Superintendent Rajasekhar Reddy led the hospital team in immediately mobilizing additional doctors and support staff to work through the night and initiate treatment for the affected individuals. Despite initial limitations in staff, the hospital team provided compassionate and professional care to patients crossing the State border.

Polavaram District Collector K. Dinesh Kumar commended the Bhadrachalam Area Hospital team for their prompt and dedicated response to the medical crisis. However, the support extended was not limited to words of appreciation. The Polavaram district administration pledged to provide the necessary medicines required by the Bhadrachalam Area Hospital, further highlighting the commitment from Andhra Pradesh to strengthen healthcare facilities in neighbouring regions.

Dr. G. Ravi Babu emphasized the strength and responsiveness of a well-coordinated public healthcare system, noting that a patient’s identity transcends State boundaries.
