Storm creates huge waves and dangerous currents at southern California beaches

Labor Day weekend saw dangerous conditions at southern California beaches due to Hurricane Marie, a hurricane well out in the Pacific. Strong currents and massive waves posed a threat to swimmers and surfers. The National Weather Service described the surf conditions as dangerous, particularly the rip currents. Some beaches reported surf up to 10 feet high.

Lifeguards issued warnings against swimming, especially at rock jetties. Long Beach's city health officer advised against swimming in the city's beaches and bays for at least three days. Seal Beach closed two beachfront parking lots until Wednesday morning to protect life and property. The storm brought potential coastal flooding and high surf to beaches, bike paths, roads, and some low-lying neighborhoods.
