Soldiers take over restive Cross River community

Nigerian Army soldiers from the 13 Brigade Calabar have taken control of the Boje and Isobendighe communities in Boki LGA of Cross River State, following a resurgence of deadly communal clashes. The ongoing conflict has reportedly caused loss of lives, damage to property, and destruction of farmlands. LGA Chairman Eti-Eka Beatrice Nyiam informed that both soldiers and policemen have been deployed to maintain order in the two communities.

Information Officer Major Yemi Sokoya confirmed the soldiers' presence but declined to provide details on the number of casualties. Sokoya stated that the soldiers will not remain indefinitely, with their stay contingent on the resolution of the situation. Once peace is restored, the military force will be instructed to depart.

The state police command had previously heightened security measures to quell the renewed tensions, as reported in a statement from the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata. Police authorities are collaborating with key stakeholders to de-escalate the crisis and promote stability. The police affirmed that the region is presently relatively tranquil, with security personnel maintaining a vigilant watch over the evolving circumstances.

They have urged residents from both communities to maintain composure, refrain from actions that might exacerbate the unrest.
