Senior Kenya Prisons officer found dead in car in Juja

A senior Kenya Prisons Service officer, Eric Kiarie Wainaina, was discovered deceased inside his car at an open field in Juja, Kiambu County. The 40-year-old Senior Superintendent of Prisons, serving at the Kenya Prisons Service Central Region Headquarters in Nyeri, was found unresponsive on Sunday morning. The discovery was reported to the police by a member of the public around 10:30 am.

Police officers from various ranks, led by the Kiambu County Prisons Commander, responded to the scene where Wainaina was found seated and leaning against the open driver's door of a silver Nissan Wingroad. Wainaina's identity was confirmed using his Certificate of Appointment, driving license, and passport, all of which were present in the vehicle.

His mobile phone and three empty 250ml bottles of Chrome spirit, an empty water bottle, and Labtol tablets, typically used for hypertension treatment, were also recovered. Bystanders reported that Wainaina was a frequent visitor to the location where he was found. The circumstances of his death remain unclear at this time, and investigators are considering the possibility of suicide.

The police, like the prison officers they serve alongside, are frequently exposed to traumatic situations that may contribute to suicidal thoughts. In an effort to combat this trend, police authorities have introduced counseling services and have established a dedicated unit to handle mental health and substance abuse issues.
