Sabalenka surges past Townsend to reach US Open quarter-finals

World number one Aryna Sabalenka advanced to the US Open quarter-finals on Sunday, defeating American Taylor Townsend 6-4, 6-3. The match began with Sabalenka breaking Townsend five times, allowing her to take a 4-2 lead in the first set. Townsend's powerful service returns and agility at the net initially troubled the Belarusian player, who double-faulted to give Townsend a break.

Townsend broke again in the fourth game, but Sabalenka's consistent power and accuracy ultimately prevailed. Townsend managed to break her serve when serving for the set at 5-2, but by the time she held at 5-4, it was too late. Sabalenka held serve for the first time since the quarter-finals, saving a break point and finishing with a forehand winner.

In the second set, neither player faced a break point during the first three games. Sabalenka, rattled after hitting a net cord, served a weak second serve that Townsend converted with a return winner, taking a 3-1 lead. However, Sabalenka immediately broke back, leading to a run of five straight games and winning the match. The Belarusian, aiming to retain her number one ranking, will now face either sixth-seeded Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova of the Czech Republic or 11th-seeded Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk in the semi-finals.
