RG Kar victim’s mother demands expansion of probe, asks why Mamata isn’t in jail

The mother of a postgraduate trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata in August 2024 has called for an expanded probe into her daughter's death. Ratna Debnath, the BJP Panihati MLA, is demanding that former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who was also the Health Minister in 2024, and the current State Health Secretary Narayan Swarup Nigam be included in the investigation.

Debnath expressed her concern over the security breach at the hospital and the confiscation of her daughter's thesis paper. She recalled the last conversation she had with her daughter, who called her at 11:15 pm on the night of the incident. Debnath also questioned why the top administrative leadership of the previous regime has not been held accountable, stating, "Why hasn't the former Health Minister gone to jail all this time?

She criticized the Suvendu Adhikari-led government for its efforts in advancing the probe since coming to power in May, and questioned the clearance given for breaking down a wall and a basin at RG Kar shortly after her daughter's death. Debnath concluded by saying that her family never intended to enter politics, but the loss of her daughter and systemic failures in Bengal's healthcare and education systems compelled her to take action for complete justice.
