Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra celebrates Canada and Mexico through the 2026 Years of Culture

The Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra (QPO) is set to present two special concerts this season, celebrating the musical heritage of Mexico and Canada as part of the Qatar, Canada and Mexico 2026 Year of Culture. The events, titled Sounds of Mexico and Sounds of Canada, will take place at the Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC) on September 18 and November 7, respectively.

Sounds of Mexico will be led by acclaimed Mexican conductor Enrique Arturo Diemecke, while Sounds of Canada will be conducted by Charles Olivieri-Munroe. Both performances aim to introduce Qatar audiences to lesser-known orchestral works from each country, fostering an emotional connection through music.

The concert series holds particular significance, as it coincides with Mexico's Independence Day celebrations and marks Enrique Arturo Diemecke's return to Qatar. Diemecke, a globally recognized conductor specializing in Latin American repertoire, previously conducted QPO in Doha in 2025 for A Musical Encounter: Sounds of Qatar and Argentina. He also led QPO in the historic debut at Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires as part of the 2025 Year of Culture program involving Qatar, Argentina, and Chile.

On November 7, Sounds of Canada will explore Canada's classical music landscape, featuring repertoire deeply rooted in the country's cultural heritage. Conducted by Charles Olivieri-Munroe, whose own story reflects the themes of migration and cultural exchange within Canadian classical music, the concert series aims to highlight the role of these elements in shaping Canadian musical identity.
