Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra celebrates Canada and Mexico through the 2026 Years of Culture concert series

The Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra (QPO) will honor the musical traditions of Mexico and Canada in two special concerts as part of the Qatar Canada and Mexico 2026 Year of Culture. The series kicks off on September 18 with Sounds of Mexico, conducted by renowned Mexican conductor Enrique Arturo Diemecke. This will be followed by Sounds of Canada on November 7, led by conductor Charles Olivieri-Munroe. Both performances will take place at the Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC).

These concerts reflect a longstanding collaboration between the QPO and the Years of Culture initiative, using music as a universal language to introduce audiences to the histories, identities, and creative traditions of Qatar's partner countries. QPO Executive Director Kurt Meister stated, "Music allows us to experience another culture in an immediate and emotional way.

With Sounds of Mexico and Sounds of Canada, we're bringing audiences in Qatar music they may not hear very often and giving them a chance to discover the composers and stories behind it. That's what makes Years of Culture so valuable, it brings people and cultures together in a very natural way."

Sounds of Mexico, presented in conjunction with Mexico's Independence Day celebrations, invites audiences in Doha to explore the country's musical heritage while offering Mexican audiences the opportunity to showcase their own cultural achievements. The concert features a selection of Mexico's finest orchestral works, including Arturo Márquez's Danzón No. 2, Carlos Chávez's Chacona in E Minor, Blas Galindo's Sones de Mariachi, and Silvestre Revueltas' Redes, Second Suite.

The November 7 concert, Sounds of Canada, will be conducted by Charles Olivieri-Munroe, whose own story mirrors the themes of migration and cultural exchange embodied by the program. Born in the Czech Republic, educated in Canada, and building an international career, Olivieri-Munroe's journey exemplifies the role of cultural exchange in shaping Canada's classical music landscape.

The concert will highlight the music of Oskar Morawetz, the Czech-born composer who became one of Canada's most prominent 20th-century composers after fleeing Europe during World War II. The program includes Carnival Overture, Kaleidoscope, On the Banks of the Saint-Maurice River, and Symphony No. 2.
