Qatar eyes role of global hub in research-driven paediatric care

Sidra Medicine, an initiative of Qatar Foundation, is piloting a research program to sequence the genomes of newborns in Qatar. This initiative aims to position the country as a global hub for research-driven pediatric care, precision medicine, and advanced therapy development. Prof Khalid A Fakhro, chief medical officer at Sidra Medicine, explained that the hospital's vision extends beyond conventional clinical care, with the ultimate goal of attracting international patients for cutting-edge research, clinical trials, and personalized treatments.

He emphasized that research is a key factor behind the international reputation of leading children's hospitals in the United States and Europe.

According to Prof Fakhro, Sidra Medicine is focusing on genomic medicine as a key research strategy. He highlighted that genome sequencing can help diagnose rare and complex diseases, guide treatment decisions, and identify additional medical risks. For instance, a child with structural and facial abnormalities underwent genome sequencing that revealed a cardiac condition, which would not have been initially suspected.

Genomic testing can also determine the most appropriate treatment for a patient and rule out inappropriate treatments.

The newborn genome sequencing program is currently in its research phase but has the potential to evolve into a clinical program. The hospital aims to sequence a newborn's genome to identify genetic risks that could lead to health problems within the first five years of life, allowing for early intervention. If successful, this approach could eventually be adopted nationwide.

Prof Fakhro emphasized that the goal is to bridge the gap between scientific discovery and clinical care, integrating research directly into diagnosis, treatment, and patient care.
