Prince Harry’s surprise UK return renews security row

Prince Harry's recent visit to the United Kingdom has sparked a discussion about whether the British taxpayers should continue to provide security for him and his family. The Duke of Sussex, accompanied by his wife Meghan and their two young children, returned to Britain last week with private security already in place at Birmingham Airport.

Previously, Harry had ruled out returning to the UK due to security concerns, having previously fought a legal battle to retain UK-funded protection while living in California. However, he has reportedly been pushing for reinstated police protection for his family. Experts argue that genuine threats likely exist, considering the family's predictable daily routines which could make them vulnerable.

The Royal and VIP Executive Committee (Ravec), an independent body overseeing security for politicians, royals, and others, would likely reassess the threat level facing Harry and his family. While the British public is divided on the issue, with only six percent favoring fully taxpayer-funded security, the prince argues that armed police protection is necessary due to the severity of the threat.

However, the cost of such services has risen significantly over the past decade, with six prime ministers leaving office compared to just two in the previous decade, leading to concerns about the financial implications of providing the same level of protection to Harry and his family.
