‘Potato’ Or ‘Potaahto’, Just Call It All Off Now

Six months into an unwarranted conflict with Iran, Donald Trump has labeled the violence and disorder as trivial, while Vice President JD Vance adamantly asserts it is not even a war. This outrageous assertion defies any rational belief. No one, including Trump's weary sailors in the Gulf, the civil servants in Foggy Bottom, or even the creators of the mess, truly believes him.

This remains unequivocally a military operation unlike any other in terms of senselessness, lack of strategic planning, merits, or justification. The United States and the world have suffered an unparalleled degree of economic turmoil, strategic exhaustion, and loss of life, with no foreseeable conclusion. Washington has resorted to an overwhelming array of secondary sanctions and threats to influence global behavior, and has faced an unprecedented wall of resistance from its historic allies.

Ignoring the basic geography of their actions, the administration failed to anticipate that blocking the Strait of Hormuz would spark the largest supply chain disruption in history, surpassing any past oil shock or the economic downturn during a pandemic. The financial and logistical damage caused by this blunder far exceeds any past US military missteps, making recent US blunders seem like a simple Sunday outing in Central Park.

The public backlash is evident in all major indicators: Trump's overall approval rating has dropped into the low-to-mid 30s, while disapproval ratings have surged past 58%. Over 60% of Americans disapprove of his economic management and inflation handling, nearly two-thirds reject his foreign policy with allies, and a vast majority views the Iran campaign as a complete failure.

Although the Commander-in-Chief promised to end the conflict in Ukraine within a day and the conflict with Iran within three months, we remain waiting for the promised "Grand Wazoo" months later. Whether you consider it a war or a minor incident, whether you say 'potato' or 'potaahto', the consequences are the same. It is time to end this catastrophe.
