Police caution residents against unauthorised drone operations in Plateau

Plateau State Police Command has cautioned residents and organizations against unauthorized drone operations in the region. In a public notice, Police Public Relations Officer SP Alfred Alabo warned that violators could face arrest, equipment confiscation, and prosecution. The warning aims to bolster security, safeguard critical infrastructure, and ensure proper regulation of drone activities across Plateau State.

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations 2023, specifically Part 17 on Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS), mandate operators to obtain permits and establish a security program prior to flying drones. Operators must submit their operation plans, including flight locations, schedules, and safety measures. Unauthorized use of drones for transporting illicit cargo, weapons, or explosives is strictly prohibited.

Police also advised operators against employing drones for activities that could result in death, serious injury, property damage, or pose a threat to public safety. Drone operators are required to maintain visual range, adhere to approved flight altitudes, and avoid restricted or no-fly zones. Using drones for surveillance or invasion of privacy could be deemed harassment, intimidation, trespass, or an act capable of causing public disturbance.

Police vowed to collaborate with other security agencies to apprehend violators, seize illicitly operated drones, and prosecute those found guilty. The police urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious drone activities to the nearest police station or its Control Room.
