Peace talks rich in symbolism but fundamental differences between Russia and Ukraine remain

The high-profile peace talks in Kyiv carried significant symbolism, as U.S. envoys, including Donald Trump Jr. and Jared Kushner, arrived by train, avoiding the risk of Russian drones targeting their aircraft. The talks took place at Kyiv's Saint Sophia Cathedral, overlooking the site of recent Russian airstrikes on the Ukrainian security services' headquarters. Despite holding discussions for several hours, fundamental differences between Russia and Ukraine remained unresolved.

U.S. envoys returned from Moscow, where they heard conflicting reports. Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed Russia was making "tangible advances" on the battlefield, while Ukrainian officials stated they had gained more territory than they lost and that Russia suffered 42,000 casualties. Putin insisted that the root causes of the conflict needed to be addressed, which typically referred to Ukraine ceding territory, abandoning NATO membership, and reducing its army size.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky insisted on strong and clear security guarantees, including a robust army, and was unwilling to give up any territory in the eastern Donbas region. U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff acknowledged progress but emphasized the need for compromises from both sides to bridge the gaps in their positions. Diplomats expressed cautious optimism that a possible settlement could emerge next spring, but many remained skeptical about the likelihood of a breakthrough, anticipating a continuation of the fighting and a challenging winter for Kyiv.
