Opeyemi Bamidele: The Man Who Ticks Many of Tinubu’s Boxes

In a Senate characterized by fervent ambition, Opeyemi Bamidele has established a reputation for his quiet yet highly effective consistency. As the Senate Majority Leader, he assumes a position of significant responsibility in the 10th National Assembly, a role that demands adept management of conflicting interests without losing sight of the broader objectives.

Bamidele's journey to this position began in the late 1980s, when he served as the National President of the National Association of Nigerian Students. This early experience laid the foundation for his later roles as a defense counsel and pro-democracy advocate during the military regime. He subsequently collaborated closely with Bola Tinubu in Lagos, initially as a special assistant, later as commissioner for youth and sports, and subsequently for information and strategy between 2000 and 2011.

During his tenure with Tinubu, Bamidele oversaw the completion of the Teslim Balogun Stadium and the renovations of Onikan Stadium and Rowe Park. His legislative achievements are equally noteworthy. Over the years, he has sponsored more than 70 bills, seven of which have established or upgraded federal institutions. Among these are the elevation of Yaba College of Technology and the Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti, to the status of full universities.

In his capacity as floor manager, Bamidele has been instrumental in guiding crucial legislation. He shepherded the Student Loan Act, which culminated in the establishment of NELFUND, and facilitated tax reform legislation. Furthermore, he sponsored a bill that reintroduced Nigeria's original national anthem in 2024. As the chair of the Senate’s Ad-hoc Committee on the National Security Summit, Bamidele has played a pivotal role in holding hearings across all six geopolitical zones and advocating for state police as a measure to address localized insecurity.

In his home state of Ekiti, Bamidele has implemented empowerment programs that have benefited thousands of small business owners. These initiatives have included direct cash grants, the provision of tractors and equipment, and the establishment of new marketplaces in five local government areas. Given his extensive institutional experience, legislative output, and unwavering loyalty to the progressive movement, Bamidele remains a key figure among those President Tinubu can depend on.
