New Delhi building collapse leaves 1 dead, others trapped

On Sunday, a building collapse in New Delhi resulted in one death and several people trapped inside, officials reported. The five-story structure, which served as a boys' hostel, fell in Satya Niketan, a densely populated area with private student accommodations close to a campus of Delhi University. It is unclear how many individuals remain entangled within the ruins, though the Press Trust of India stated that dozens lived there.

Lawmaker Anil Sharma indicated that some individuals had been rescued while others were making calls for assistance. Rescue teams, comprising police, firefighters, and personnel from India’s disaster response agency, were working tirelessly to extract those trapped amid the debris, with earthmovers aiding in the clearance of rubble.

At least two victims were hospitalized in critical condition, according to officials. The reason behind the collapse was not immediately known. Building collapses pose a recurring threat in certain parts of India during the monsoon season, typically from June to September, as heavy or prolonged rainfall can undermine aging structures.
