Lane Kiffin Fires Back at Critics After LSU’s Blowout Win Over Clemson

Head coach Lane Kiffin defended himself against critics following LSU's dominant 51-10 victory over Clemson in their season opener on Saturday night. The controversy surrounding Kiffin's efforts to bring fifth-year players with NFL contracts onto the roster added fuel to the ongoing debate. In his postgame press conference, Kiffin acknowledged the heavy criticism he faced but maintained that his decisions were driven by what he believed was right for the players.

"I've been criticized heavily the last two weeks, and I get that, I understand that," Kiffin said. "But my job is not to please you and worry about what you're going to write. My job is what I believe is right, and I believe we were fighting for what was right for those kids."

Kiffin praised his players for handling the distractions well, stating, "They seemed to do exceptionally well without having these players on the roster, completely embarrassing Clemson in a lopsided blowout." The controversy centered around the NFL players, tight end Dae Quan Wright and defensive lineman Zxavian Harris, who were sought to be added to the roster due to a new NCAA eligibility rule allowing certain players to receive up to five years of college eligibility.

However, Kiffin decided not to activate Wright or Harris for the game against Clemson, as the situation was currently facing litigation.

The Tigers showcased their offensive prowess with a total of 644 yards, including 309 rushing yards, led by quarterback Sam Leavitt and running back Dilin Jones. Defensively, LSU recorded four sacks and an interception for a touchdown, contributing significantly to their impressive win. LSU's season begins with a 2-0 record when they take on Louisiana Tech on Saturday, Sept. 12, at 7:30 p.m. Eastern Time.
