Lagos: Nigerian govt begins Kara Bridge repairs September 8

The Nigerian government has initiated repairs on the Kara Bridge segment of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway starting September 8, according to the Federal Ministry of Works. The two-week repair project aims to address damaged expansion joints that have surpassed their service life and pose a safety concern to motorists. Acting Controller Richard Adeleye explained that the intervention is necessary due to the expansion joints' deteriorated state, which has contributed to several accidents.

The repairs will be carried out in stages to minimize traffic disruption, with one side of the affected section closed initially while the other half remains open for controlled traffic flow. Adeleye emphasized that vehicles will traverse the operational portion at reduced speeds throughout the construction period. To manage the anticipated traffic impact, personnel from the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, and Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, will be positioned around the area.

The repaired expansion joints are expected to remain functional for between 10 to 20 years. Motorists are advised to consider alternative routes, such as the Ikorodu-Ogijo Road or roads surrounding Sango and Abeokuta, while those remaining on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway will pass through the restricted section under traffic control.
