Kurla Residents Booked Under MRTP Act For Alleged Unauthorised Flat Alterations

Five residents of Aman Cooperative Housing Society in Kurla West, Mumbai, have been booked under the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning (MRTP) Act for allegedly carrying out unauthorised alterations in their flats. The case was registered by the Vinoba Bhave Nagar police following a complaint from Sanjay Dudhbhate, an assistant engineer with the Building and Factory Department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

The amendments were detected during an inspection of the society on July 16, 2025, with further alterations found in multiple flats, including 102, 103, 201, 401, and 502. In flat 102, an internal wall was removed to merge two flats. Similarly, in flats 201, 401, and 502, internal walls were allegedly removed, and kitchens were converted into bedrooms or hall areas. These changes contravene the sanctioned building plan approved on June 12, 2013, according to the BMC.

The civic authorities issued notices to the flat owners/occupants to restore the premises to the approved condition within a month, with the deadline expiring on August 16, 2025. However, a follow-up inspection on February 10, 2026, found that the alterations had not been restored. Another inspection on August 5 reportedly denied the BMC access to the flats. The police stated that further investigation into the matter is ongoing.
