Kedah appeals for continued cloud seeding as Pedu, Muda and Ahning dam levels keep falling

Alor Setar, Sept 6 — The Kedah state government has urged the continuation of cloud seeding operations, overseen by the National Disaster Management Agency, to counteract falling water levels in state dams. Committee chairman Datuk Mohamad Yusoff Zakaria stated that while the recent operations on Sept 2 and Sept 3 yielded rain, it was not enough to significantly increase reservoir levels.

Prior to cloud seeding, the total water supply at Pedu, Muda, and Ahning Dams was at 37.14 percent, but has since plummeted to 36.64 percent. The water level at Pedu Dam has dropped from 39.02 percent to 38.46 percent, Muda Dam's level fell from 9.32 percent to 9.04 percent, and Ahning Dam's level decreased from 45.32 percent to 45.00 percent.

Zakaria emphasized the importance of sufficient dam water supply for the smooth operation of padi irrigation systems in Kedah, as the state's agricultural sector heavily relies on these water sources. Earlier, the federal government took proactive measures to tackle dry weather conditions, low rainfall, and the risk of worsening air quality through cloud seeding operations in Kedah and Perlis.
