Jakarta Keeps Watch on Anak Krakatau Activity and Ash Dispersion

Jakarta's government remains vigilant on Anak Krakatau's volcanic activity and ash spread, urging residents to stay calm and informed. On September 6, 2026, a 16-second eruption with a 50mm peak was registered at 07:10 local time. The volcano's status is Level III (Alert/Siaga), with lava flows and incandescent rocks as primary threats. A 3-kilometer radius around the crater is off-limits to the public and tourists.

The Jakarta Meteorological Mapping Agency (BMKG) recorded additional eruptions at 09:03 WIB, with a 19mm amplitude and 29-second duration, showing no significant sea level changes or anomalies. Volcanic ash has expanded beyond Jakarta, reaching Purbalingga Regency in Central Java and parts of the city. The government advises mask-wearing, limiting outdoor activities, and using protective eyewear to prevent ash inhalation and irritation.

Residents should keep doors, windows, and vents closed, cover food and drinks, and clean up ash with wet methods. Driving should be cautious due to reduced visibility and possible slippery roads.
