I've lived in New England my whole life. There's one Rhode Island town that I love visiting in the fall.

As a Rhode Island native, I've grown accustomed to the notion that the Ocean State shines brightest during the summer months. Iconic beach days in Westerly and guided tours of Newport mansions are often touted as the epitome of a quintessential Rhode Island experience. However, I hold a different perspective. For me, there's no time of year more enchanting than autumn. Middletown, a lesser-known gem in the state, is my go-to destination for a cozy fall getaway.

Middletown offers an array of seasonal delights - from quaint local farms to picturesque beaches with a cozy charm. The town's stunning vineyard, hosting an annual harvest festival, is an absolute must-visit. As summer crowds recede and the foliage transforms into a fiery palette of red, orange, and yellow, I believe fall officially sets in for New England.

My perfect fall day begins with a pumpkin-spice latte from Custom House Coffee, a local favorite known for its seasonal beverages. From there, I head to Sweet Berry Farm, my top pick for apple-picking. The farm's selection of apples, ranging from golden to Fuji, adds a delightful crunch to my fall adventures. Late September or early October is the sweet spot for this activity, as apple-picking season ends in mid-October and pumpkin season begins in September.

After a satisfying day of apple and pumpkin picking, a leisurely walk along the quiet beaches of Second or Third Beach is the next on my agenda. While the beaches are usually bustling during summer, they offer a tranquil atmosphere in the fall - perfect for soaking in the ocean's beauty or enjoying a peaceful stroll with a loved one. The beaches also provide easy access to the Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge, a haven for fall hikes with potential sightings of migratory birds and other wildlife.

The day culminates with a visit to Newport Vineyards, a highlight even though it's technically located in Middletown. As the sun sets, their famous Great White wine, fruity and light, pairs wonderfully with a cheese board. The vineyard also offers tours, often accompanied by live music and a cozy fire pit, making it an ideal place to relax and enjoy a well-spent fall day.
