Infantino to stand for re-election as FIFA president despite failed World Cup sell-off plan

FIFA's Gianni Infantino announced on Sunday that he will seek re-election for a fourth term, the world governing body confirmed. Despite mounting pressure and calls for his resignation, FIFA has stated that Infantino will vie for the position in 2027. This decision remains unchanged following Infantino's announcement in April.

UEFA, Europe's soccer governing body, has been leading the push for Infantino's removal, expressing a loss of confidence and previously threatening to boycott FIFA tournaments, including the World Cup. Several national associations, including England's FA, have also withdrawn support for Infantino's re-election bid.

At a recent event, Infantino declined to address his future when he arrived for the opening match of the Women's Under-20 World Cup in Poland. He stated, "There will be a lot to say, but there will be a right place and a right time to say this. It’s not today, it’s not here, but here and today, we are enjoying football."

FIFA has apologized for the issues surrounding its plan to sell profits from the World Cup through a commercial subsidiary, vowing to prevent such mistakes from recurring. However, this apology has not alleviated the pressure on Infantino's position. The deadline for candidates to announce their intent to run in the upcoming presidential election is November 18, four months before the actual vote.
