Infantino to stand for re-election as FIFA president despite failed World Cup sell-off plan

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has announced his intention to seek re-election for a fourth term in office, FIFA confirmed on Sunday. Despite mounting pressure to resign following a failed plan to sell shares in the World Cup, FIFA spokespersons stated that Infantino will pursue a fourth term through 2031. "The FIFA President announced in April that he will stand for re-election in 2027. Of course, nothing has changed. Mr. Infantino will be standing for re-election," the spokesperson added.

UEFA, the governing body for European soccer, has been at the forefront of the calls for Infantino's removal, citing a loss of confidence in his leadership and threatening a boycott of FIFA events, including the World Cup. Several national associations, such as the English Football Association, have also withdrawn their support for Infantino's re-election bid.

Infantino's decision not to address his future during the opening ceremony of the Under-20 Women's World Cup in Poland did little to alleviate the mounting scrutiny. On Saturday, the FIFA President declined to comment on his potential future when he arrived at the event. "There will be a lot to say, but there will be a right place and a right time to say this. It’s not today, it’s not here, but here and today, we are enjoying football," Infantino told Sky News.

FIFA has apologized for the errors that arose from its controversial plan to sell profits from the World Cup via a commercial subsidiary, vowing to ensure such mistakes do not recur. However, these assurances have failed to quell the growing pressure on Infantino's position. The deadline for candidates to enter the next presidential contest is set for November 18, just four months before the actual vote.
