German startup Isar reaches orbit in boost to Europe’s homegrown launch ambitions

German startup Isar Aerospace launched its first rocket into space from a site in Arctic Norway on Saturday, September 5, marking a significant step for Europe's homegrown launch ambitions. The uncrewed Spectrum rocket, designed for small and medium-sized payloads, reached orbit and became the first commercial flight to do so from continental Europe.

This achievement strengthens European security and autonomy in the face of shifting global power dynamics. Isar Aerospace's success follows a recent €232 million investment from the European Space Agency to support the development of new rockets and expand its testing and launch infrastructure. Isar's second launch, 18 months after its first failed attempt, generated valuable data for the company's developers and aimed to carry five small satellites and an in-flight technological experiment.

Norway's Minister of Industry and Commerce, Cecilie Myrseth, hailed the event as a breakthrough for the European launch industry and a boost to European security in turbulent times. The company's goals extend beyond Norway, with plans to develop a second launch site in Canada. Key players in the satellite launch market include SpaceX, led by Elon Musk, and ArianeGroup, a joint venture between Airbus and Safran.
