Gauteng Education draws battle lines against placement syndicates

The Gauteng Education Department has taken a firm stance against corruption as it transitions to the learner placement phase of the 2027 admissions process. Following the closure of applications for Grade 1 and Grade 8, the department has cautioned parents against engaging with individuals who claim to guarantee placements in exchange for payment.

Gauteng Education MEC Lebogang Maile emphasized that learner placement is not a commodity that can be purchased, warning that anyone attempting to tamper with the admissions process will face repercussions. This warning comes after the department's closure of the 2027 Online Admissions application period on September 4th.

For thousands of Gauteng parents, securing a spot for their children at their preferred schools has historically been a daunting task, with some resorting to questionable methods in pursuit of placement. As the province prepares to allocate learners for the 2027 academic year, the Gauteng Education Department has issued a strong warning against corruption and fraud throughout the admissions process.

With the 2027 application window having already closed, the department's attention now shifts from applications to the actual placement of learners.

The Department reports receiving hundreds of thousands of applications for Grade 1 and Grade 8, highlighting the immense pressure on Gauteng’s public schooling system. Now, the task for Gauteng encompasses two critical objectives: accommodating space for every eligible learner and maintaining the integrity of the placement process. Parents whose children have submitted their admission applications will need to await further communication regarding placements, which is anticipated to commence in the following month.
