China This Week | From SCO to upcoming BRICS summit in Delhi, diplomacy in focus for Beijing

In recent days, China has been at the center of several significant diplomatic engagements, with more meetings and summits on the horizon, including one in India. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi convened with National Security Adviser Ajit Doval in Beijing during late August for the 25th round of Special Representatives (SR) talks on the boundary issue. They reached an 8-point consensus, committing to advancing negotiations on a framework for settling the boundary question.

Prime Minister Xi Jinping and President Xi both visited Kyrgyzstan’s Bishkek for the annual Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit earlier this week, marking the 25th anniversary of the organization. The group adopted the "Bishkek Declaration," which includes commitments to combat terrorism and expresses concern over hostilities between the US, Israel, and Iran.

The upcoming BRICS summit in New Delhi, from September 11 to 13, will be Xi's first visit to India since 2019. The meeting follows a series of developments, including the LAC standoff, the Covid-19 pandemic, and the US-China tariff war. It also occurs before Xi's first official visit to the United States under the Second Trump Administration.

These diplomatic moves highlight the importance of addressing the sensitive boundary issue between India and China as both nations seek to deepen their ties for mutual benefit.
