Gachagua opens door for Sifuna-Mt Kenya alliance in 2027

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has hinted at a potential political alliance between Mt Kenya and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, should Sifuna emerge as the opposition's joint presidential candidate in 2027. Speaking from Spokane, United States, Gachagua stated his readiness to serve as Sifuna's running mate or for Sifuna to deputise him if needed.

Gachagua emphasized that the opposition should not rush the selection of the presidential candidate, suggesting the decision could be made between March and May 2027. The former Deputy President's remarks indicate a broader strategy to unite the Mt Kenya region within a larger opposition coalition, potentially challenging President William Ruto.

Gachagua dismissed concerns that Sifuna, hailing from western Kenya, could not attract support from Mt Kenya, pointing to the region's historical support for former President Raila Odinga despite his non-Mt Kenya background. He also rejected claims that Sifuna is too young to become president, citing Barack Obama's election at age 47 as proof that age should not be a barrier.

Gachagua sees the opposition's challenge as an arithmetic game, urging the government to settle on a single presidential candidate to maximize their chances of defeating Ruto. The Mt Kenya region, once loyal to Ruto, has grown critical of the Kenya Kwanza administration, and Gachagua aims to convert this disaffection into a unified political force capable of influencing the 2027 election outcome.
