Gachagua declares readiness to deputise Sifuna in the 2027 presidential race

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has declared his willingness to serve as a running mate for Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna in the 2027 presidential race. During a community engagement in Spokane, Washington, on August 6, 2026, Gachagua stated that he would have no issue being Sifuna's vice president if that ticket could unseat incumbent President William Ruto.

Gachagua, who also has aspirations for the presidency, believes he has the numbers and capabilities to defeat Ruto but is prepared to step aside if his peers determine another candidate would be more likely to win. Gachagua highlighted Sifuna, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, and himself as serious contenders for the opposition ticket.

He encouraged Sifuna not to let criticism about his age discourage him from running for president, comparing him favorably to former US presidents Barack Obama and Franklin D. Roosevelt. The opposition leader emphasized the need to avoid a divided presidential contest and called for the opposition to rally behind a single candidate capable of defeating Ruto in the first round.

Gachagua stated that he would advocate for his own candidacy but would support another candidate if it was determined to be the best choice to defeat Ruto.
