CMU-Q convocation ceremony celebrates largest incoming class in campus history

Doha, Qatar - Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMU-Q) hosted a convocation ceremony to welcome its largest incoming class to date, marking the Class of 2030's official entry into the academic community. The event underscored the institution's growing presence in Qatar and its commitment to offering top-tier education to a diverse global student body.

Orientation Week saw new students meet faculty, understand expectations, and explore the resources available to them, ensuring a smooth transition into university life. With a first-year class size expanded to 140 seats, CMU-Q received over 3,100 applications, a record-breaking number for the campus.

The new freshmen hailed from 36 countries, including CMU-Q's inaugural students from Honduras and South Sudan. Dean Michael Trick welcomed the students, urging them to embrace their role within the university's community. The ceremony was emceed by computer science student Junaid Yusuf, with senior associate dean for education Dudley Reynolds introducing faculty and leadership.

Freshman Ali Fawaz Al Ajji, delivering the senior speaker's address, emphasized that success at CMU-Q is about asking questions, seeking help, and realizing that students do not have to undertake the journey alone. CMU-Q provides undergraduate degrees in artificial intelligence, biological sciences, business administration, computer science, and information systems, with applications for the fall 2027 intake opening on September 1.
