Championship leader Antonelli wins Italian Grand Prix

Kimi Antonelli, the 20-year-old Mercedes driver, triumphed in the Italian Formula One Grand Prix at Monza on Sunday, delivering an impressive performance from the back of the grid. This marked his seventh victory of the season, with a notable first win at his home grand prix, and extended his lead in the championship standings to 66 points.

Antonelli claimed the checkered flag, outpacing his Mercedes teammate George Russell in a thrilling race. Verstappen secured the third position in his Red Bull, while the McLarens finished second and third with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. In a dramatic start to the race, Lewis Hamilton's Ferrari collided with teammate Charles Leclerc, leading to a red flag and a brief pause in proceedings.

Leclerc, a two-time winner at Monza, was unhurt but the race was halted for safety. Following the restart, Antonelli rapidly climbed the ranks from 19th to 12th position, and when the race resumed, he engaged in a fiercely contested battle with Russell. Antonelli made the most of a free tyre change during a virtual safety car period on lap 29, swapping to mediums while Russell remained on hard tyres.

He gained a 15-second lead and managed to overtake Russell on lap 49, ultimately securing the win by the final three laps of the race.
