Championship leader Antonelli wins Italian Grand Prix

Monza witnessed a thrilling Italian Grand Prix victory for Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli on Sunday. The 20-year-old Italian driver started the race from 19th position, having exceeded the allowed number of power unit changes, but showcased a stunning performance to climb to 12th place during the restart.

Antonelli engaged in a fierce battle with his Mercedes teammate George Russell during the latter stages of the race. A crucial 15-second lead gained by Russell evaporated when Antonelli exploited a free tyre change during a virtual safety car period on lap 29, switching to fresh medium tyres. This strategic move allowed him to close the gap and overtake Russell on lap 49, eventually claiming the checkered flag.

The win marked Antonelli's seventh victory of the season, his first home Grand Prix win for the Ferrari-supported team, and extended his lead at the top of the championship standings to 66 points. Max Verstappen finished third in his Red Bull, with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri of McLaren rounding out the top six. Lewis Hamilton secured the final spot in the top six for Ferrari, providing a morale boost for the many Italian fans.
