Cerundolo sees wide-open men’s field after Fritz upset at US Open

New York: Tenacious Argentine tennis player Francisco Cerundolo is convinced this year's US Open men's singles field is the most open in recent times, after defeating ninth seed and former finalist Taylor Fritz in a stunning comeback. Currently seeded 24th, Cerundolo battled back from a 2-0 deficit in Saturday's opening match at Arthur Ashe Stadium to secure a 3-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 victory over his compatriot Fritz, one of the tournament's upsets.

With only four top-10 seeds remaining in the draw, Cerundolo expressed that the current level of play is incredibly even, with matches being tight and victories difficult to achieve. Numerous high-profile players, including former world number one Novak Djokovic, Felix Auger-Aliassime, and Alex de Minaur, have already exited the tournament.

Cerundolo will next face Belgium's Alexander Blockx, who similarly upset a top seed by eliminating Italian fifth seed Flavio Cobolli earlier in the day. With momentum on his side, Cerundolo, making his fourth round debut at the Grand Slam, is eager to secure his deepest run yet at the US Open and aims to avenge his previous loss to Blockx in the last 16 at the Madrid Masters 1000 this year.
