Behind fatal concoction that killed 12, gang that mimicked booze by Madhya Pradesh brands

In the aftermath of a deadly alcohol tragedy that has claimed at least 12 lives, police in Madhya Pradesh are investigating a gang from neighboring Uttar Pradesh for allegedly supplying spurious liquor to the region. The victims, primarily from Nauraj and Gogra villages in the Banda police station area, are receiving treatment in hospitals after consuming the illicit substance on Saturday night.

Superintendent of Police Anurag Sujaniya of Sagar confirmed that the substance involved was initially identified as country liquor, but further investigation has led authorities to a Lalitpur-based gang with a history of manufacturing and distributing counterfeit liquor. This gang is believed to mimic Madhya Pradesh brands, making it nearly certain that the supply originated from this source.

The administration has already initiated disciplinary action against Excise Department officials, with Deputy Chief Minister Jagdish Devda revealing that three officials have been suspended pending a comprehensive investigation. The government has directed authorities to investigate the role of the liquor licensee involved and take strict legal action if found responsible.

Police have detained about 10 individuals for questioning as they work to identify the source of the supply and those responsible for its distribution. The investigation will also examine potential administrative lapses that allowed the illicit liquor to reach the affected villages.
