Atlanta United Set for Round of 64 Start in 2027 Open Cup

Atlanta United is set to begin their Round of 64 campaign in the 2027 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The new format for the tournament starts in July, aligning with the MLS's shift to a summer-to-spring schedule. All 27 MLS clubs will enter at this stage, with rosters expanded to 20 players, allowing coaches to mix first-team starters with academy prospects.

The old Open Cup schedule didn't mesh well with the new MLS calendar, so U.S. Soccer intervened to create a clear path for everyone involved. The 112th edition of the tournament now has a defined set of dates for the Round of 64, which will take place from July 8 to July 11, 2027. This change ensures players aren't overwhelmed with games too early in the season and gives them time to prepare for the 2027-28 MLS regular season.

For the 2027 tournament, game day rosters will grow from 18 to 20 players, giving teams more flexibility in managing their squad depth. The "one club, one entry" rule remains the same, but the expanded roster allows young players from the academy to get competitive minutes against top-tier opposition. This arrangement benefits both the players and the clubs, as they can balance the demands of multiple competitions without overextending their resources.

Winning the Open Cup not only secures a trophy but also guarantees a spot in the Concacaf Champions Cup. Nelson Rodriguez, MLS Executive Vice President of Sporting and Matchday, emphasized the unique opportunity the tournament provides for MLS clubs to make history and secure qualification for the international stage. Since 2000, an MLS side has won every edition of the Open Cup, and Atlanta United, a longstanding participant since 1996, aims to add another title to its collection.

The new format provides Atlanta United with a clear path to success. The team will host their opening match if they are the MLS club, giving fans in Mercedes-Benz Stadium a unique advantage as they witness the competition begin. The shift to a summer start allows the team to build momentum and test the abilities of young players from the academy, who will be eager to make their mark on the big stage.
