At least five dead after Amazon cargo plane speeds off runway at Miami airport

A cargo plane operated by Amazon Air crashed and sped off the runway at Miami International Airport, resulting in at least five fatalities and five injuries, according to the mayor of the city. The incident occurred around 2 p.m. local time, on September 11, 2022, when the plane, which was on a flight from San Juan, Puerto Rico, overshot the runway while attempting to land.

Amazon Air operates the aircraft under a contract with Prime Air, Amazon's delivery service. The FAA reported the crash time as 14:00 local time. Thick black smoke was seen rising over the disabled aircraft, which was found at the northwest end of the airport. All runways and taxiways at Miami International Airport are currently closed, and a ground stop has been implemented.

The airport and local authorities are working together to determine the cause of the accident. All inquiries related to injuries or fatalities should be directed to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.
