Andalucia local police to carry tasers and rifles as Junta plans 2027 rule change

Andalucia's local police officers are set to receive a major upgrade to their uniforms and technical equipment, with the potential addition of taser electronic pistols and rifles. The new law, which aims to standardise the appearance of over 500 local forces, will also equip certain roles with rifles. Antonio Sanz, first vice-president and emergencies minister, revealed that the new law is in its final stages and will be implemented in early 2027.

The Electronic Control Pistols, or 'tasers', will be used by officers for situations requiring physical restraint without conventional ammunition. Rifles, on the other hand, will be limited to specific roles designated by the Junta. The uniform rules will be integrated into the same law, ensuring consistency across all forces in regions such as Huelva and Almeria.

This upgrade comes after concerns raised by the Spanish National Police and Guardia Civil about the limitations of the old 2003 law, which left local police exposed. While there are potential risks associated with the use of tasers, such as probe wounds, falls, cardiac arrest in rare cases, and interference with medical devices, studies suggest that the majority of individuals hit with a taser experience only minor injuries like probe marks and bruises.

The new law is expected to strengthen local forces and enhance the protection of Andalucians, but the line between a last-resort tool and everyday street kit will need to be carefully drawn to ensure safer policing.
