Anak Krakatau eruption cancels 209 Soekarno-Hatta flights: InJourney

Jakarta is currently grappling with a travel crisis as volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau has disrupted flights, leaving many Malaysians stranded. The situation has been exacerbated by the closure of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, which has forced the cancellation of 209 flights and affected 22,798 passengers.

One Malaysian traveler, going by the name Spritzerphilips on social media, expressed frustration at being stranded at the airport with no clear path back to Malaysia. She had to secure a new flight for Tuesday, stating that the hotel and ticket arrangements were already sorted. Another user suggested traveling overland to Yogyakarta or Surabaya as an alternative, should the new flight also be cancelled.

Another Malaysian, Muhamad Norshahrizal Norizan, shared his family's plight on Facebook, stating that they have been stranded in Jakarta for two days as their flights have been repeatedly cancelled. Musfyrah Mansor also posted on Facebook, recounting her own stranded situation after her flight was cancelled this morning. She noted that her airline has informed passengers that flights will be rescheduled once conditions improve.

The disruption has been caused by the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau, which sent volcanic ash into the airspace around Jakarta, forcing the suspension of operations at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. According to Indonesia’s Civil Aviation Director General, Lukman F Laisa, the airport closure has impacted 22,798 passengers.

Several airlines, including Malaysia Airlines, Batik Air, and AirAsia, have also cancelled or rescheduled flights as a result of the situation. The circumstances remain fluid as Indonesian authorities continue to monitor the spread of volcanic ash and its impact on flight operations.
