Anak Krakatau chaos strands Malaysians in Jakarta, with hotels full and next flights two days away

Jakarta is facing a travel nightmare as tens of thousands of Malaysians find themselves stranded at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport following volcanic ash disruption from Mount Anak Krakatau's eruption. Tens of flights have been cancelled, leaving travellers scrambling for alternative plans. Some, like Spritzerphilips, have rescheduled their tickets for later in the week, while others like Muhamad Norshahrizal Norizan and his family have been stuck for two days.

Facebook users suggest travelling overland to Yogyakarta or Surabaya as a potential solution. The Indonesian Civil Aviation Director General, Lukman F Laisa, reported that 209 flights were cancelled, affecting 22,798 passengers at the airport. Malaysia Airlines and Batik Air have cancelled a combined 20 flights, while AirAsia has either cancelled or rescheduled several services.

The situation remains fluid as Indonesian authorities keep a close eye on the spread of volcanic ash and its impact on flight operations.
