Yemen sees worst clashes in years as fighting kills 129

Fighting across western Yemen reached its worst in years on Saturday as government forces launched counterattacks against Iran-backed Houthis, who have advanced on strategic areas near the Bab Al Mandab strait. The conflict followed Houthi ground assaults accompanied by rocket and drone strikes near coastal regions. Military sources indicated that the operation aimed to seize the government-held port city of Mokha and progress towards Bab al-Mandab territory.

By Friday, the death toll from the clashes had reached 129, with 66 government soldiers and at least 62 Houthi fighters reportedly killed, along with one civilian. The Bab al-Mandab waterway, connecting the Red Sea to the Indian Ocean, is a crucial maritime route linking Asia, Europe, and the Mediterranean, making its control vital for Saudi crude exports.

Government forces reported regaining control of all areas in Hays district and seizing Saeed Taha and Dhiban heights in Hayfan district of Taiz province. Warplanes conducted over 15 air strikes against Houthi positions along the western coast in Taiz and Hodeida. The Houthis had already seized elevated positions overlooking government-held areas near the Red Sea and the inland city of Taiz, potentially posing a threat to ships passing through the surrounding waters.
