Heavy rainfall triggers another round of waterlogging, Gurgaon residents asked to “avoid non-essential travel”

Heavy rainfall on Saturday in the Gurgaon district of the Capital region has resulted in another round of waterlogging, prompting the local administration to advise residents against "non-essential travel" and to avoid waterlogged roads, underpasses, and low-lying areas. The city witnessed significant water accumulation in Sector 51 of Mayfield Gardens and several trees fell in the industrial area of Udyog Vihar Phase IV after afternoon rains.

Delhi also experienced waterlogging in locations such as Dwarka and Najafgarh-Nangloi, disrupting traffic movement.

The Gurgaon District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) issued an advisory following an India Meteorological Department (IMD) bulletin predicting heavy downpours of over 15 mm per hour within a two-to-three-hour period, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds. Authorities strongly urged commuters not to attempt crossing waterlogged stretches on foot or in vehicles, stressing the challenge of gauging water depth and hidden road hazards beneath the surface.

Citizens were also warned to maintain a safe distance from trees, electricity poles, and overhead power cables vulnerable to damage in the squally winds.

In Delhi, the traffic police cautioned motorists against stopping or parking under bridges, underpasses, and waterlogged areas. The upcoming BRICS Summit may also impact traffic flow, with potential disruptions at various locations due to related events and rehearsals. In Gurgaon, field teams have been dispatched to clear fallen trees and branches along roads in Sectors 18-19 and Udyog Vihar following the rainfall.

The District Disaster Management Authority has mobilized quick-response field teams, mobile suction tankers, and high-discharge dewatering pumps to address chronic inundation points. Teams are actively clearing debris and operating auxiliary pumps to accelerate runoff discharge into primary channels, including the Badshahpur drain, to minimize disruption and facilitate the swift discharge of rainwater.
