Worker dies after getting trapped in conveyor belt at Athi River plant

On September 4, 2026, a 20-year-old worker named Timothy Oyindi Nyarige lost his life after becoming entangled in a conveyor belt at a steam plant in Athi River, Machakos County. The accident occurred around 1pm at a facility managed by Golden Africa Limited. As colleagues attempted to rescue Nyarige, who was trapped in the machinery, the company’s security manager arrived on the scene.

The worker was eventually freed and taken to the company’s dispensary, where he received immediate medical attention before being transferred to Shalom Hospital in Athi River for specialized treatment. Upon arrival at the hospital, Nyarige succumbed to his injuries, which included damage to his right hand and head. Police officers arrived at the scene shortly after the incident and initiated an investigation.

Preliminary findings suggested that Nyarige had slipped into the conveyor belt while working with colleagues at the steam plant. His body was preserved at the facility pending autopsy as police probed the circumstances surrounding his untimely death.
