US strikes hit three Iranian oil tankers off Kharg Island

Three Iranian oil tankers were targeted by US forces, according to US Central Command, one of which was off the coast of Kharg Island near Iran's key oil export hub. The strikes were carried out in response to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launching ballistic missiles at two US Navy ships. Admiral Brad Cooper, head of US Central Command, warned that Iran would face economic consequences for shooting at US ships.

Tasnim reported that four US missiles hit a tanker in the area of Kharg's anchorage, with no casualties and the crew being evacuated. No American personnel were harmed, as per Central Command. The exchange of attacks comes after a week of escalating tensions threatening to further escalate a conflict that began with US strikes on Iran in February.

Iranian authorities have vowed a strong response if Kharg Island is attacked. Iran is the third-largest oil producer in the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, with 90% of its crude exported via Kharg Island before the war. The US blockade of Iranian oil exports began in mid-April, disrupting flows. President Donald Trump had previously threatened to take over Kharg Island, though it was later ruled out.

The US attack on Kharg Island could further pressure Iran's oil industry and economy, already struggling from the US naval blockade. Brent crude futures closed at a record high of $96.28 a barrel due to Middle East tensions.
